Sun Xun

The Week Ahead: Aug. 17-23 from New York Times 2008

The HAMMER MUSEUM in Los Angeles introduces a bright young Chinese artist, SUN XUN, in his first United States museum show. Mr. Sun, born in 1980, is best known for his extraordinary animations combining political cartoons and academic painting. At the Hammer, he turns a gallery into a walk-in history book, half theater, half mausoleum, covered with black-and-white murals devoted to several New Chinas, from the Cultural Revolution through the 1989 catastrophe at Tiananmen Square to the money-and-nationalism-fueled country of today. As with many artists on the current international scene, Mr. Sun’s political commentary is stated obliquely, and his critical position is hard to pin down. The force of his critical sensibility, however, is clear, as is his protean talent. Through Oct. 12, 10899 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, (310) 443-7000, hammer.ucla.edu.
