A Short Text about Zhou Tiehai

from "Infinite Painting - Contemporary Painting and Global Realism by Francesco Bonami & Sarah Consulich Canarutto 2006

Zhou Tiehai uses paintings, video and photography to reproduce and reinterpret the icons of the Western artistic culture with the traditional of propaganda art and Chinese Social Realism. With a team of collaborators and a studio similar to Andy Warhol’s Factory, the artist creates with sprays and industrial paint works which, by abandoning the concept of authorship an self-reference, adhere to reality and its issues. The portraits of Chen Chong, Xiao Xiong and Deng Lijun reflect the media imagery through which the faces of these stars emerged in the popular culture of the Eighties. Just like posters advertising films or photography from glossy magazines, these canvases express a nostalgic idealization of cinema icons. At the same time, they reveal through an immediate language, the interpretation of painting as an analysis of the market mechanisms that regulate the contemporary world.
