When David Diao returned to China for the first time in 1979, he bought a book entitled ‘Hundred Flowers Bloom’. There are hundreds of flowers' seal motifs in the book, whose author takes advantage of the traditional art form to launch an indirect critique of the Let a Hundred Flowers Bloom Campaign and the Cultural Revolution. Diao believes that the use of words and text usually raises the possibility of more signification, and hence he borrows the seal from that book, and embeds it in some of his paintings, which gives the audience some space to think, aside from the form of visual beauty. Besides, the painting Seal 5 (2017) also refers to the location of the red square in Malevich’s Black Square and Red Square (1915).
