In this work, the artist walks from Houyangjia to Niuzhuang, wearing a pair of high‑heeled shoes her grandmother never owned, together with the dress that was her grandmother’s everyday wear. Amid the anachronistic heels and persistent, wordless pain, the surrounding landscape stands as a silent witness to the past. Real‑world geographical shifts refract an imaginative gaze and invisible histories, while the meandering music carries “her” thoughts, drifting between near and far.
This 28‑kilometre journey sets off at sunrise around six o’clock in the morning and concludes amid sunset glow at six in the evening. It covers the physical distance from Houyangjia in Tai’an County to Niuzhuang in Haicheng — the very stretch separating the artist’s grandmother’s birthplace in the 1930s from the home of her future husband, whom she had never laid eyes on. As she stepped onto this path, she could barely picture the Central Plains more than a thousand kilometres away, nor could she foresee the divergent fates awaiting her and her family, as they would scatter and settle across disparate locations.
