This book was published in conjunction with 'DEOA Art Criticism Award, 1999', which had been held for twice biennially from 1995. The award was renewed in 1999 and divided into two parts: a competition part screened by a small group of the board, and a study part on art criticism published between 1 January 1997 and 31 December 1998, having an art critic and scholar Lee Cherng-jiunn as a responsible researcher.

Accompanying this change, two books were published simultaneously and the present publication showcases the various kind of selected articles and essays from periodical, exhibition catalogues and papers published during the period.

With 19 pages of the index of art criticism from 1997-1998 at the end of the book
