The new work in 2022 presents the latest phase of Su Chang's exploration of fluid interior space. While the exterior of a sculpture is usually presented to the viewer as the main body, the interior is obscured from view, Su breaks this common rule by creating an open structure where the space inside the work creates an "empty" flow and "solid" sculpture that together form a complete work. The calm interior and the turbulent exterior extend the tension of the work. All the sculptures are made in a direct way to practice "thinking with the hands," while the process of splitting, carving, cutting, and painting allows the artist's actions to be present in another state, the traces of which are intentionally preserved by the artist. Even if the same materials are used, the city's water supply at different times of the day and the different hours of sunlight affect the works, which naturally take on subtly different colors. The sound of absent water and the trajectory of the body's movement seem to be sketched out, hidden in the "void" between the viewer and the sculpture. The sense of sculptural passages constitutes a visual rhythm, deriving a personal and poetic form of structure that echoes our inner humanity silently as the work itself overlaps moods, like a slowly undulating breath.
