The latest project from “Spatial Productivity,” Robert Zhao Renhui: Looking for Wilderness, is now on view at the commercial plaza of Suzhou Olympic Sports Centre. The work consists of wallpaper specially designed by the artist and a 13-screen video installation. The green wallpaper is patterned with images of villages, ponds, weasels, thrushes, and other motifs, all depicting real animals that have at some point “wandered” into the artist’s cameras. The 13 screens present footage filmed by the artist over the past three months in abandoned villages.
This “urban wilderness,” a space where the city and nature continually advance and retreat from one another, is where these stories unfold: two pigeons in love, two thrushes in love, and two Siberian weasels in love; a weasel wrestling with a snake; a black horse wandering through a village... On site, visitors can discover many more images of wild animals engaged in encounters that range from affection to conflict.
The footage has been processed by the artist into black-and-white images. Each screen offers another perspective on the artist’s exploration and interpretation of the “urban wilderness.”
