ShanghART Gallery is pleased to present After the Reflection Leaves the Water, a solo exhibition by Liu Yi, on view at the UOB Art Space from June 10 to November 15. In 2024, Liu Yi was named UOB Emerging Artist of the Year for her video work The Earthly Men as part of the UOB Ink Art of the Year Award. This exhibition is also the first solo presentation organized by UOB China for an award recipient.
Liu Yi's practice moves fluidly across ink, animation, video, painting, and installation. Drawing connections between personal experience, the natural world, and contemporary life, her work retains the sensitivity of ink while engaging with questions of perception, memory, reality, and the image in the digital age.
After the Reflection Leaves the Water considers the moment when the image breaks away from reality and takes on a life of its own. In an age of endless reproduction, projection, and algorithmic generation, images no longer simply reflect the world—they circulate through screens, data, and memory, shaping how we perceive reality itself. "The reflection leaves the water" marks the point at which the image ceases to follow reality and begins to redefine it.
