Xu Lishuang’s solo project “Passing, gnissaP” is presented at ShanghART M50’s The Passage Project. Beginning with those aspects of everyday behaviour that appear to require no conscious attention, she approaches the body as both an interface and a method, transforming otherwise implicit rules and structures into perceptible bodily experiences.
Taking the act of “passing” as its beginning, “Passing, gnissaP” unfolds in two different ways: the former refers to the body passing through space, while the latter points to industrial objects that intervene in perception as they pass through the body. By altering the direction of movement, adjusting the sequence of actions, and reorganising the relationship between the body and its tools, the two are juxtaposed within the project, allowing everyday experience to shift and transform through certain actions…

About Lishuang XU
Lishuang Xu (b. 1989, Changsha) graduated from Chelsea College of Arts (UAL) majoring Fine Art, and now lives and works in Shanghai, China. Working across performance, video and installation, Xu invites viewers to confront the unease experienced by the body and perception in a rapidly changing society. Her practice engages with labour, spatial transformation and systems of performance measurement. Drawing inspiration from everyday actions, she employs strategies of estrangement to explore the entanglement of subjective perception and objective reality.
