Parramatta Artists Studios (PAS) and ACMI, in partnership with the Playking Foundation, are pleased to announce Taiki Sakpisit as the recipient of Focus Asia: Residency, Commission, Acquisition.
Focus Asia is a major new international initiative supporting artists based in South-East Asia to develop new work integrating performance and moving-image art practice.
Selected through an international open callout, Taiki Sakpisit is undertaking a three-month residency at PAS, developing a new commission through long-form research, development and local and interstate engagement. The resulting work will premiere at ACMI in Melbourne and will be acquired into ACMI’s collection.
With three commissioning partners, Focus Asia represents a significant collaboration designed to strengthen relationships between artists and creative communities across the Asia Pacific, Western Sydney and Melbourne.
Taiki Sakpisit is a Bangkok-based filmmaker and visual artist who deploys cinema as a charged and experimental lens through which to examine Thailand’s contested histories, political violence and the unstable terrain of memory. His work is formally sophisticated and atmospherically dense, often weaving together myth, archival fragments and psychological disquiet to produce works that are both visually arresting and politically incisive.
During his residency at PAS, Taiki will be embedded within the studio community, undertaking research, developing new work, and engaging with artists and audiences across Western Sydney. The residency marks a new commissioning pathway that connects Parramatta and Melbourne through production, presentation and acquisition.
Focus Asia forms part of PAS International: From Western Sydney to the World, Parramatta Artists Studios’ first long-term commitment to international exchange, collaboration and artist development – placing long-term relationship building at the centre of its approach.
