Zulkhairi Zulkiflee’s “Nyamok (Mosquito)” is an exhibition that begins with the mosquito as an omnipresent leitmotif in everyday life. The title refers to the mosquito in the Malay language, where couched within the referent is the word "amok," a word that characterizes the limits of control, particularly in relation to aggression and masculinity. Comprising written narratives and text-based artwork, the exhibition meditates on the inconsequential as powerful elements that disturb and shape domestic entanglements in relation to the body and desire.
The exhibition is a segue into Zul's recent interest in storytelling and autotheory that emerges from shelters, functioning as a spatial device alongside everyday structures. Zul's practice is committed to unpacking racialised, lived experiences, and Nyamok (Mosquito) explores this through articulations around bodies and the invisible forces that impress upon them.
