The me Collectors Room Berlin is to stage a special kind of premiere in the shape of the exhibition 王 Ouyang Chun – PAINTING THE KING. The artist, born in Peking in 1974, is being honoured with a museum solo show for the first time outside China. His cycle “King”, developed between 2006 and 2009, will also be on view to the public for the first time.
The thirty paintings measuring in some cases up to five metres long, relate in astonishing painterly diversity episodes from the life of a king — his victories and defeats, as well as tales of love and death. History and fiction, the quest for beauty and the depiction of moral collapse commingle in the partly minutely designed, partly expressively impasto paintings teaming with figures. Although Ouyang Chun alludes to ancient tradition by the use of gold leaf and gilt in his paintings, he transforms both motif and medium equally in order to hold up a precious mirror to today’s world.
An elaborately design book will be published in German, English, and Chinese with a text by the exhibition’s curator, Dr. Margrit Brehm.
The painter Ouyang Chun is considered one of the most prominent positions among the “young generation” within contemporary art from the People’s Republic of China. He studied painting until 1995 at the Academy of Fine Art in Xi’an. The artist has held solo shows, amongst other places, at the Shanghai Gallery of Art, Shanghai and the Star Gallery, Peking. His first exhibition in German was held at the Galerie Frank Schlag, Essen in 2009.
