The inspiration for this painting comes from a fusion between a giant, dancing body and the monumental mountain silhouettes of Guilin. What I intend to articulate are two kinds of conflict. The first: a monument implies weight, permanence, and authority, whereas dance implies transience, movement, imbalance, and the flesh. Between these two lies a highly intriguing conflict. The second is the contradiction between its own weight and its lightness.
The gigantic presence in the image all but fills the entire space, yet what constitutes it is thin, particulate, and possessed of a transparent, pearlescent luster. Its body seems as though it might disperse at any moment, and yet it carries an unshakable force.
Here, the rocks of Guilin and the mist of its waterfalls and streams have given me an innate sensibility.
