White Rabbit Gallery of Chinese Art Announces PARADI$E BITCH

Sydney’s White Rabbit Gallery, the world-renowned museum of Chinese contemporary art, has announced that its next exhibition will be its most complex to date and will feature mainly new acquisitions, including several works not completed until Spring 2015.

The provocative title of the exhibition, “PARADI$E BITCH,” is taken from a surreal and outlandish video work by the influential young Beijing-based artist Tianzhuo Chen in which the artist suggests that “heaven on earth is a Paradi$e Bitch.”

According to the Gallery, “Visions of heaven on earth have a way of being scuppered by reality. Over the centuries, the Chinese people have seen one promised paradise after another turned on its head or smashed to pieces.

White Rabbit Gallery will close its doors for six weeks on Thursday July 30 to install the exhibition and will reopen on Thursday September 10 with an exhibition whose scale and energy the Gallery says are unprecedented.

Highlights of the exhibition include:

“Eternity” (2013-2014), a multi-ton work by Xu Zhen (MadeIn Company) in which ancient statues of Buddhist and Greek deities become conjoined twins, at once monstrous and magnificent

Chen Tianzhuo’s high-voltage video “Paradi$e Bitch” (2014), an all-singing, all-dancing reflection on spirituality in the age of the selfie

Shi Yong’s drug-inspired, topsy-turvy neon poem, “A Bunch of Happy Fantasies” (2009)

“Square” (2014), a tribute to the Tiananmen Square massacre in which Zhang Dali presents migrant workers’ private longings as fantastical white doves

“Drunken Dance Hall” (2015), Chen Wei’s eerie vision of the wreckage of Chinese dreams.
