A Murmur of Contradictions and Hybridity: The "Folds" and "Touch" Palpable on the Surface of the Paint Layer.
Li Mingchang's canvases, from afar, present a restrained "likeness." The low-saturation tones temper excessive chromatic conflict; every application of color is measured and precise. Through the deliberate arrangement of lines and color blocks, he redistributes the focal points of observation. The objects he touches upon do not declare a stance; instead, they represent a coexistence between things. He does not manufacture sentiment; the looseness and negative space carry their own power, harboring symbiosis, allowing us to read his characteristic tranquility and lingering aftertaste within the interstices.
Intricate textures, remnants of the past, and hesitant edges overlay one another, forming the internal logic of his creative practice. These unspoken considerations, hidden beneath the surface, are often only glimpsed in conversation with him.
Picking up the brush, it is a "deliberate disregard" after holding one's breath; setting it down, it is the "unsaid" within the stark reality. This "dual expression" is the surviving logic of his negotiation with the world.
The picture plane is like skin—it can be delicate, or perhaps it can be coarse.
I suggest you try to move closer. A little closer still.BY Lin Aojie
