Initially trained in photography, some of Lai's early works involved making several series of repetitive photographs documenting himself performing simple rules and instructions. This series began when he photographed a corner of his room as a test shot after loading a roll of 35mm film into his camera. He had then decided to dedicate this camera and the remaining film solely to photographing this subject. Carrying this camera around with him everyday, the series of 35 images were shot and slowly accumulated over a period of six months.
