ShanghART WB Central is pleased to announce the group exhibition “Trapping Fever,” curated by DUO Projects, running from September 14 to October 26, 2025. In a 2024 article for The New York Times, cultural critic Hillary Kelly introduced the term “stucktopia” — a concept that aptly captures a defining dilemma of our recent years: a condition that is neither fully utopian nor classically dystopian, but rather a liminal space suspended between the two.
We are enveloped in technological convenience, yet these unprecedented levels of connectivity exist alongside social pressure, ecological control, and a pervasive sense of technological alienation. Often, we feel trapped within this systemic force, caught in cycles of stagnation or futility.
In this curatorial project, “TRAPPING” denotes an active and targeted form of pursuit, while “FEVER” refers to a pervasive and uncontrollable state of energy.
We are at once scorched by external heat and, often unwittingly, become its very source.
This curatorial project thus investigates the inextricable symbiosis between the individual and a global condition of symptomatic intensity.
Through diverse media, the participating artists respond to this pervasive fever—whether manifested as information overload, consumerist frenzy, or climatic warming. Confronted with such intensity, one need not remain a passive captive; instead, each person may choose to intervene with agency.
This curatorial project will continue to probe: Where does this fever begin? How does it envelop individuals into its system? Are we merely victims, or also accomplices? Can art provide ways to examine, heal, or even reimagine this condition?
This curatorial endeavor seeks to preserve a space for the artist’s personal emotion—like a cool thread, a steady traction—guiding us deep into the heatwave, mapping its latent structures and boundaries.
