ShanghART WB Central will present the new exhibition “From Hen to Egg" on January 18, 2025. The exhibition features a wide range of works, offering a grand feast that spans the Chinese New Year. “From Hen to Egg" is a colloquial metaphor that suggests the inherent nature of artistic creation—just as a hen can lay eggs without a rooster, art will always continue to emerge in surprising forms in any context of the times. Each part of the exhibition is like eggs from the artists, with cycles of creation and transformation hidden within, and new vitality and energy will burst forth.
A Special Egg:
Shedding Pathway: Between the Ventricles and the Magma
Curator: Zhang Wenxin
Artists: Pan Caoyuan, Zheng Xue, Wang Yueyue
Insects and animals molt because their old bodies no longer meet the needs of growth. As living beings shed their original forms and advance into the future, they simultaneously leave behind spectral remnants of the past in space. The exhibition Shedding Pathway: Between the Ventricles and the Magma creates a serpentine space suitable for the body to slither through, showcasing works by artists PAN Caoyuan, WANG Yueyue, and ZHENG Xue that explore transformation and generation, as well as the relationship between nature and the body-mind. Many of their creations arise from local experiences and somatic perceptions, and through long-term medium exploration and insights into materials that overflow beyond their original forms, they transform organic substances—such as toxic tree sap, thorned seeds, insect resin, mother-of-pearl, and jellyfish skin—into new forms. These are coupled with inorganic materials such as medical imagery, everyday ready-made items, and electronic components, guiding the emergence of a new body toward a searing domain that resonates and integrates with the artists and viewers, positioned between the heart chambers and the molten depths of the earth.
